Suburbia Gone Wild

This picture doesn't give the feeling I had justice. I couldn't get on the side of the road safely (I was driving) to get a good enough picture of all the McHouses I saw on the trip. The view even had my family hanging their jaws at the vastness of this suburban sprawl. This area was only one of many spots in this area where we saw this mass of unsustainability. Yes, the horizon is nothing but rows of suburbia. Click on the picture and you may get a closer view.

I went on a trip to Crown Point/Merrillville, Indiana, this weekend to watch my grand-daughter play in a softball tournament. She lives in Chicago and we haven't ever seen her play so we thought since she would be in Indiana for a tournament, we would make the trek and watch her play. The trip was uneventful and safe.

However, the sprawl that I've encountered in this area over this weekend was absolutely unbelievable!! It was so unsustainable! Is THIS what is going on all over the country?? This area was NOT very developed 5 years ago. If anyone knows Indiana, especially northern Indiana, they would know how flat it looks. It used to be nothing but cornfields. Not anymore! Out of these earthen flatlands have arisen mass oasis' of McHomes, chain restaurants, hotels, and malls. I've been sick ever since.

How do they get water and electricity to these places? Does anybody really NEED that much space to live in? And why do they want their homes all to look alike and to have no green trees around them or anything? Think of all the heating and cooling! ...and the commute? Where do these people work? Do they drive to Chicago everyday???? Oh, this is just massive. I mean, I've seen the construction and building going on around the Indianapolis suburbs and thought it was ludicris then but this place is right in the middle of BFE (if you know what I mean). The only way I can relate it to you is that it's similar to the situation of Las Vegas.

I'm sorry...I just can't get over it. I'm sickened.
